A picture of India on Diwali, taken from space by 'NASA', has by now become a standing joke. The Photoshopped picture was circulated year after year - but people are wise to it now. So what does India actually look like from space on Diwali - the festival of lights? Thanks to astronaut Paolo Nespoli, we now have an answer. On October 19, the 60-year-old Italian astronaut shared a photo of India, taken from space.

India At Night, As Seen From Space

NASA has just released new global maps of the Earth at night - the first since 2012. The stunning satellite images of Earth at night, referred to as "night lights," have been released every decade or so for nearly 25 years. Now, NASA scientists are trying to see if the night lights imagery can be updated more frequently - perhaps even daily. Doing so would drastically change how we forecast weather, improve natural disaster responses and even help track the effects of war.

India Launches Record 20 Satellites In 26 Minutes, Google Is A Customer

SRIHARIKOTA, ANDHRA PRADESH: HIGHLIGHTS India's space agency ISRO placed 20 satellites in space today. More than half are for US, only 3 for India. India competing for bigger share of $300 billion global space industry. Shortly after 9 am, India successfully launched a rocket which deposited a record 20 satellites in 26 minutes - proof that the country's famously frugal space agency, ISRO, is headed for a larger slice of the lucrative commercial space market. The rocket blasted off from the southern spaceport of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, carrying satellites mainly for international customers including the US, Germany and a Google-owned company. It was the most satellites India has put in space at one go, though Russia set the record of 37 for a single launch in 2014.

Gir Forest National Park

The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest and wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, India.Established in 1965, with a total area of 1412 km² (about 258 km² for the fully protected area the national park and 1153 km² for the Sanctuary), the park is located 43 km in the north-east from Somnath.
It is the sole home of the Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. The ecosystem of Gir, with its diverse flora and fauna, is protected as a result of the efforts of the government forest department, wildlife activists and NGOs.

Neelakurinji flowers

Neelakurinji is a shrub that is found in the shola forests of the Western Ghats in South India. Nilgiri Hills, which literally means the blue mountains, got their name from the purplish blue flowers of Neelakurinji that blossoms gregariously only once in 12 years.

Kerala Forest Department will be deploying more wildlife watchers in the hills and valleys of high range Munnar to protect 'Neelakurinji', the rare purplish blue flowers which bloom only once in 12 years.The blossoming of the beautiful flowers in Munnar in Idukki district, located in the biodiversity hotspot of Western Ghats, is attracting a large number of tourists and nature enthusiasts to the hill town.

PAINTINGS BY RAJA RAVI VARMA-Mother & Child

Raja Ravi varma (1848 - 1906) is famous for his paintings based on Indian mythology & epics. He was was born in Kilimanoor Palace as the son of Umamba Thampuratti and Neelakandan Bhattathiripad. Even at the young age his talent was spotted by his uncle Raja Raja Varma, (Ravi Varma used to draw on the walls) and gave him initial training in painting. Later he learnt water colour painting from the palace artist Rama Swamy Naidu. He learnt oil painting from the British artist Theodor Jenson.

Towards the end of the 19th century, when there was a lack of vitality in Indian painting, he was one of the few artists who re-introduced Indian subjects in his works.
